"What I remember about my time at KCU was how rough school was," says Dr. Larry Handlin. "As students, we didn't have time for much else."

Dr. Handlin's memories of his years at KCU have inspired him to support students at the school today, and take steps to ensure that support is there for students of the future as well.

He's been a consistent donor to his Physicians' Hall of Sponsors scholarship, which he created in 2002, and recently he made two planned gifts to continue this support.

"I had a lot of help getting through school," he continues. "Knowing the financial issues students face while pursuing an education, I wanted to provide that same kind of help that meant so much to me.

"I know the people who helped me would've wanted me to do this."

When Dr. Handlin was a student, he started off in pharmacy school. As he began rotations, he became more intrigued by medicine and decided to pursue it as his chosen career.

"I feel I've had a successful career and that KCU gave me the opportunity to be successful," he says.

Dr. Handlin also feels philanthropy plays an important role in keeping the school's education of the highest caliber and attracting the best in the field.

"Medicine is ever changing and likewise the education and training needs to change with it. I know philanthropic activities have helped make these necessary advancements happen.

"The students are our future and I feel it's necessary to nurture them through this process as we certainly want to continue to produce exceptional physicians. I also feel by offering an excellent educational experience and school we will be able to attract top applicants."

In addition to being a generous donor to his alma mater, Dr. Handlin serves his community through many civic organizations and committees throughout Mexico, Missouri.

"I would encourage all graduates to give back to the school and the communities they serve if they're able," he concludes.
